- Codex Labs product
Independent volume, mute, routing, and sound controls for every Mac app. Submix adds the per-application audio mixer macOS has never shipped, so a loud browser tab no longer forces you to turn the whole system down.
The challenge
macOS has no native per-app volume mixing. Core Audio applies volume at the hardware layer, so the only built-in control is a single system-wide slider, and no one technique for working around that covers every application.
What we built
We built a menu-bar mixer that gives each running app its own volume, mute, and output routing. Because no single approach works universally, Submix implements four distinct techniques for per-application control and applies the one that suits each app.
Key features
- Per-app output volume, independent of the system slider
- Per-app mute without touching other audio
- Per-app output routing between devices
- Four distinct techniques for achieving per-app control
- Works around Core Audio's hardware-layer limitations
- Menu-bar interface with per-app controls at a glance
- Notarized, Developer ID signed, with Hardened Runtime

Outcome
Shipped as a notarized, Developer ID signed macOS app, sold on taperlark.com with a one-time lifetime licence. Supporting four separate control techniques is what lets the app cover apps that a single Core Audio workaround would miss.
